Currents and Tides
Along the coast, the tides are semidiurnal with two high tides and two low tides. The tidal range is about 3m.
Tidal streams occur in the entrance channels and in the Tagus River. Under normal conditions the average rate of the incoming stream between the shoals near the mouth of the river is 2 kt (maximum of about 4 kt) and that of the outgoing stream is about 3-4 kt. However, after heavy rains, which cause freshets known as Aguas do Monte, the outgoing stream may attain a rate of 5 or 6 kt. This tidal stream is strongest along the center and south side of the river channel. The outgoing stream is usually felt from two to three miles outside the bar and even further offshore during freshets. After a period of prolonged rainfall, the outgoing stream has been found to commence about one to 1½ hours before high water and to continue for the same period of time after low water.
When a strong outgoing stream is opposed by a gale from seaward, the sea breaks completely across the entrance channel bar so that these breakers are indistinguishable from those on the Cachopos, shallow areas on both sides of the channel entrance.
Tidal streams in the vicinity of the NATO POL Pier are unpredictable. Close to the turn of the tide they may flow in the opposite direction to the main stream.
